All Hail the Ale!

Just sampled my latest brew and, all modesty aside, its one of the best I have ever tasted. A nice dark brown ale made with target and cascade hops. A rich flavour with a distinctive aroma. Its also very economical due to the grains and hops i have used.

Recipe (5gallon or 23litres)

4kg Marris otter pale malt
70g black malt
Mash for 90minutes

Boil 75 minutes
25g target hops (start of boil)
25g cascade hops (last 15mins of boil)
1tsp Irish moss (last 15mins of boil)
600g sugar (probably too much, i think this brew is about 6.5%ABV, 400g would result in something nearer 5%, or it could be completely ommited to give about 4%)

Nottingham yeast (reclaimed from a bottle of my last brew)

The Nottingham yeast I got out of desperation when I made my last brew and found I was out of yeast and that was all the local shop had. It imparts a neutral flavour, ideal when using hops with a strong character and has a low and dense sediment sediment, good if you want to bottle. In fact the first bottle I tried i drained the last drop out of and no sediment went into the glass.

I will have to get another on for Christmas, I don't think this will last long!

What's in a name?

At the end of each month my wife and i got to my mums house for dinner and excessive amounts of alcohol. On one particular evening the wine and subsequent brandy's seemed more potent than normal and the conversation veered in strange directions. You know the kind of thing, your trying to discuss deep theological and philosophical issues while being barely able to utter a coherent sentence!
The next day, as my head started to clear I mentioned to my Elaine that I could not remember much of the previous evening, but at times I experienced 'flashes of bullshit'!
I think this will be a good name for the rambling and disconnected nature of posts in this blog. Expect posts on general day to day stuff; alcohol and the brewing of; music; ukulele; films, especially trashy horror; hiking; photography; science and my musings on my journey from evangelical christian to atheist.
Hope you enjoy, feel free to comment, just keep it friendly!
